Matheus Cunha was born Matheus Santos Carneiro de Cunha on May 27, 1999, in João Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil.
Cunha began his football career at the youth level with Coritiba in Brazil. He moved to Europe to join the Swiss club Sion, at the age of 18. He played for the German club RB Leipzig in 2018 and Hertha BSC in 2020. He joined the Spanish club Atletico Madrid in August 2021 and left on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Januray 2023.
At the international scene, he represented Brazil at the under-23 levels where he won a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He was called up to the senior team in September 2020, for the 2020 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Bolivia and Peru. He eventually made his debut in a 1-0 away victory against Chile on September 2, 2021, where he came on as a substitute for Gabriel Barbosa at the 78th minute.
